Getting an employment visa in Dubai is a basic part of working legally in the city. The process includes several steps, handled mostly by the employer. Each step has its own timeline and documents.
This guide gives a simple look at how the Dubai employment visa process usually works from start to finish.
Job offer and approval:
The process begins when an employer in Dubai provides a job offer. The company then applies for an initial approval from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE). This approval allows the applicant to legally enter the UAE to complete the rest of the process.
Entry permit issuance:
Once the job offer is approved, the employer requests an entry permit (also called a pink visa). This document is usually valid for 60 days and allows the employee to enter the UAE. It can be sent electronically and does not always involve a stamp in the passport before arrival.
Medical test:
After arriving in Dubai with the entry permit, the applicant must take a medical fitness test. This includes a blood test and chest X-ray at a government-approved medical centre. The results are usually ready within a few working days.
Emirates ID application:
Along with the medical test, the applicant also applies for an Emirates ID. This step includes fingerprint scanning and a photo. The Emirates ID is a key document used in daily activities, such as banking or signing contracts.
Labour contract signing:
The employee signs a labour contract with the employer, which is submitted to MOHRE. This contract includes the job title, salary, and working hours. Once approved, it becomes part of the official employment record.
Visa stamping:
The final step is getting the residency visa stamped in the passport. The employer submits the passport to the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA). Once stamped, the person is legally allowed to live and work in Dubai for the duration of the visa, usually two or three years.
Collecting emirates ID:
After visa stamping is complete, the Emirates ID card is printed and can be collected. The ID is valid for the same period as the visa.
